Galaxy Unpacked 2022: The new Samsung Galaxy S22 Lineup is here

Samsung has just announced its latest and greatest through the new Galaxy S22 lineup. As with the S21 lineup, they have three new models; S22, S22+, and S22 Ultra. Samsung unveiled them in the latest Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event held on 9th February at 3 PM GMT.

Both S22 and S22+ follow a design language similar to their predecessors. The only noticeable difference from the S21 series is the absence of a two-tone finish on the camera bump and body. The S22 Ultra features a complete redesign from its predecessor, with its flushed camera bump, creating a unique look different from the other two in the lineup.
The S22+ and S22 Ultra have the Gorilla Glass Victus Glass Back panel, whereas the S22 has a plastic back.
Both S22 and S22+ come in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Pink Gold, and Green colors. S22 Ultra also comes in four colors; Phantom Black, Phantom White, Burgundy, and Green.
The S22 Ultra comes with an S-Pen built-in, taking the user back to the good old days of the iconic Galaxy Note.

The S22 is noticeably smaller (by 5.7mm), thinner (by 0.3mm), and slightly less wide (by 0.6mm), thereby providing better ergonomics in ease of usage.
The S22 Ultra is slightly smaller (by 1.8mm) and wider (by 2.3 mm), making it a better choice for single-handed usage.

  • S22 – 77.9 x 163.3 x 8.9mm
  • S22+ – 75.8 x 157.4 x 7.6mm
  • S22 Ultra – 70.6 x 146 x 7.6mm

Both S22 and S22+ with a display size of 6.1″ and 6.6″ respectively show a decrease of 0.1″ screen size from the S21 lineup. However, S22 Ultra saw an increase in screen size to 6.9″ from the 6.8″ S21 Ultra. The S22 models come with a Gorilla Glass Victus+ display for increased protection and scratch resistance.
Aspect ratio varies across the models this time, with S22 and S22+ having 19.5:9 and S22 Ultra 19.3:9. In the previous S21 lineup, all phones came with the more conventional 20:9 aspect ratio.
All three models support a maximum refresh rate of 120Hz with variable refresh rate LTPO display (10-120Hz), but only S22 Ultra’s display goes all the way to 1Hz while displaying still content.

Both S22 and S22+ feature the same 10MP selfie camera punch-hole lens and triple rear camera system with a 50MP F1.8 Primary Camera with Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and Phase Detection Autofocus (PDAF), a 10MP F2.4 3x Telephoto Camera and a 12MP F2.2 Ultra-wide Camera. S22 Ultra, on the other hand, features a 40MP Selfie Camera and Quad Camera Setup at the rear, consisting of a 108MP F1.8 with OIS and PDAF, a 10MP F4.9 10x Telephoto Camera, a 10MP F2.4 3x Telephoto Camera, and a 12MP F2.2 Ultra-wide Camera. Samsung has improved the camera quality by AI fine-tuning, and focusing on enhancing the Night Mode and images in the dark environment.

Processor and GPU
As always, Samsung comes with two different chipsets for the S22 lineup; the Exynos 2200 chipset with Xclipse 920 GPU set to be launched as the International model and the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset with Adreno 730 GPU in the models in the US, Canada, and China market. Even though the Exynos has a reputation of falling close behind the Snapdragon chipsets, Exynos 2200 introduces Ray Tracing to the Smart Phones, benefitting from Samsungs collaboration with AMD.

RAM and Storage
S22 and S22+ both come with 8GB RAM and two storage options; 128GB and 256GB. S22 Ultra has four storage options 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, with 8GB/12GB RAM option.

Battery and Charging
Both S22 and S22+ get a battery downgrade of 300 mAh from their predecessors to 3700 mAh and 4500 mAh, respectively. It could be due to both models’ reduced screen size and dimensions. The S22 Ultra retains the same 5000 mAh battery from the S21 Ultra.
Both S22 and S22+ support 25W Fast charging, whereas the S22 Ultra supports up to 45W Super Fast charging (0-70% in 35 minutes!). However, Samsung is not providing Chargers and Earbuds in the box. So, if you would like to get the maximum potential of the S22 Ultra’s Fast charging, you would have to purchase their new 45W charging brick separately. It also features a 15W Fast Wireless charging.

The S22 lineup is priced from $800, starting with the Base S22 128GB storage 8GB RAM model. S22+ starting price is set at $1000, and S22 Ultra is set at $1200, the same price tags as their predecessors. Pre-Order for all the S22 lineup devices has started on 9th February 2022. The S22 Ultra starts shipping from 25th February, and S22 and S22+ start shipping from 11th March.
